Wait\u2026 What is this ? It\u2019s a question that often comes to your mind when you spend a little time in a museum\u2019s collections storage. You walk into the room looking for a beluga tooth, only to have your attention caught by an object you had never noticed before. Curiosity being what it is, it\u2019s hard not to want to find out more. Luckily, one of the responsibilities of Exploramer\u2019s museum team is to document the collections and gather as much information about them as possible.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Aujourd\u2019hui, on d\u00e9couvre une arme un peu particuli\u00e8re. En effet, ce fusil n\u2019est pas destin\u00e9 \u00e0 la chasse, mais bien \u00e0 la recherche scientifique. D\u2019une longueur de 125 cm et principalement constitu\u00e9 d\u2019aluminium et de plastique, ce dernier pouvait projeter une fl\u00e9chette \u00e0 l\u2019aide de sangles en caoutchouc, de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re que le ferait un lance-pierre. Le projectile permettait de r\u00e9aliser une biopsie sur un mammif\u00e8re marin.<\/p>

La biopsie est une technique importante dans l\u2019arsenal des chercheurs. Elle consiste \u00e0 prendre un petit \u00e9chantillon de peau et de gras de l\u2019animal pour en analyser la composition. La technique a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9labor\u00e9e dans les ann\u00e9es 1970-1980 pour collecter des donn\u00e9es sans devoir avoir recours aux n\u00e9cropsies. Bien que consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme invasive, la technique n\u2019a qu\u2019un impact mineur sur l\u2019animal lorsque pratiqu\u00e9e correctement.<\/p>

La biopsie s\u2019est consid\u00e9rablement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, et ce autant dans le perfectionnement des outils de collecte que dans la diversification des facteurs analys\u00e9s. De nos jours, il est possible d\u2019effectuer des analyses ADN, de mesurer l\u2019accumulation de polluants dans les tissus, de mesurer les niveaux d\u2019hormones de l\u2019animal et d\u2019\u00e9tablir son r\u00e9gime alimentaire. Tout \u00e7a \u00e0 partir d\u2019un peu de peau et de gras!<\/p>

Le fusil et la fl\u00e9chette pr\u00e9sente dans les collections d\u2019Exploramer ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s par le biologiste Jean Laurin alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tudiait les b\u00e9lugas du Saint-Laurent dans les ann\u00e9es 1970. Son fr\u00e8re, monsieur Guy Laurin, nous en a g\u00e9n\u00e9reusement fait don. Ces objets t\u00e9moignent autant du d\u00e9veloppement de cette technique que de l\u2019histoire de la biologie marine au Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>
