An important chapter in the history of Exploramer and Haute-Gaspésie was written today in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. The official groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction on the highly anticipated St. Lawrence Shark Pavilion, scheduled to open in summer 2027.
First envisioned in 2016, this major project is now entering a new phase. After several years of planning, collaboration and hard work, this vision is finally becoming a reality.
Far more than just an expansion, the St. Lawrence Shark Pavilion represents a new chapter in Exploramer’s development and in the celebration of Quebec’s marine heritage.
The project has been made possible thanks to the unwavering support of the governments of Canada and Quebec, the MRC de La Haute-Gaspésie, the Town of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts and the Fonds du Grand Mouvement Desjardins.
Exploramer would also like to recognize the contributions of the Molson Family Foundation, the Hewitt Foundation, the Fondation de la faune and the TELUS Foundation, as well as the support of Tourisme Gaspésie.
However, this project could not have become a reality without the exceptional commitment of the Sainte-Anne-des-Monts community. From the earliest stages of the project, residents, local partners and the many people who believed in this vision have played an essential role in bringing it to life.
Covering 1,400 m² across three floors, the future pavilion will invite visitors to discover a fascinating world: the sharks that inhabit the waters of the St. Lawrence.
At the heart of the building will be an impressive tank containing 250,000 litres of salt water. Visitors will also be able to explore an immersive exhibition designed by Moment Factory, offering an experience where science, technology and wonder come together.
The pavilion will also include:
These new facilities will further strengthen Exploramer’s scientific, educational and cultural missions. They will also support the advancement of research, the sharing of knowledge and greater public awareness of both the richness and the fragility of the St. Lawrence ecosystems.
Several elected officials and partners joined us for this historic occasion:
Their presence reflects the importance of this project not only for Exploramer, but for Haute-Gaspésie and Quebec’s maritime region as a whole.
We would also like to warmly thank the residents of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, as well as the many members of the Exploramer team who joined us to share this historic moment.
Today, ground was officially broken. A new adventure begins.
