In 2009, Exploramer founded Smarter Seafood, an eco-guide that advocates for the healthy management of marine resources in the St. Lawrence.
Located in the town of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, Exploramer is a recognized science museum whose mission is to raise public awareness of the St. Lawrence marine environment and the importance of preserving it. Through its aquarium, museum, sea excursions and educational program, Exploramer educates visitors about the biodiversity of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Every year, some 32,000 people visit Exploramer.
Every year, in anticipation of fishing season, Smarter Seafood releases a list of marine species that are edible, sufficiently plentiful in the St. Lawrence, sustainably harvested, and which may not be overly familiar to consumers. These species are an excellent way to try new seafood products and explore new flavours while helping to protect the biodiversity of the St. Lawrence.
