Confidentiality Policy
Exploramer understands the importance of respecting privacy and protecting the personal information it collects, whether it be on the organization’s website, on the Smarter Seafood platform or at any of the events it organizes. This policy aims to inform you about how we collect, use, share, save and protect your personal information.
COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
Whenever you visit our website or our platforms, we collect two types of information: personal and non-personal.
Personal information is information that can be used to identify an individual, or information about an identifiable person. You may choose not to provide your personal information. Should you do so, however, we might not be able to provide you with the product, service or information requested.
The types of information that we collect depend on the nature of our interactions.
Account Creation and Online Ticketing
Exploramer collects the following information for payment, monitoring, purchasing history and billing purposes and in order to maintain up-to-date records of our donors and subscribers. Thanks to these features, you can purchase tickets for museum activities, make a donation, obtain an “Amis d’Exploramer” card, stay informed about activities, participate in events, etc.

If you prefer not to create an online account, you can make purchases directly from Exploramer’s ticketing service. It is also possible to delete a customer account and any data associated therewith by sending an email to the privacy officer at the following address: info@exploramer.qc.ca.
Newsletter
Exploramer collects certain information when an individual subscribes to a newsletter. Such information is necessary to be able to continually update the list of subscribers or to target preferences and offer customized content. The newsletter is managed by a third party (in this case, Mailchimp).
At any time, it is possible to unsubscribe from the newsletter distribution list by clicking on the designated link at the end of our newsletter emails. For more information on how Mailchimp manages personal information, read its confidentiality policy at: https://mailchimp.com/about/security/

Smarter Seafood
Generally speaking, the information collected on the Smarter Seafood platform concerns businesses and not individuals. However, some of the information collected may be considered personal information, for example when the professional address of a business owner is the same as his or her home address. To this end, we should point out that the information collected for user registration, identification and relation management, notably for the online marketplace and participation in events, are the following:
- Region
- Contact name (optional)
- Address of company (optional; possibility to obscure the address on the website)
The platform is only used to put businesses in touch with fishers/producers by sharing information on poorly known and underexploited marine species. The platform cannot be used for financial transactions (no purchases or transfers of funds possible).

COLLECTION OF NON-PERSONAL INFORMATION
Non-personal information cannot be used to identify you as an individual. Anytime you visit any of our websites, we may collect non-personal data such as:
- IP address;
- The type of browser or device you are using;
- Approximate geolocation;
- The links you click on our site; and
- The content that you view on our site.
This is done through the use of archives / log files and cookies and is useful for us to improve user experience or for statistical purposes. In order to protect you personal information, your session on our website automatically expires after a certain period of inactivity, which notably means that any items added to your shopping cart are deleted.
You can choose to deactivate cookies entirely or plan for them to be deleted from your Internet browser, though this might reduce the quality of your user experience, as cookies are used to ensure that websites work correctly.
CONSENT
Exploramer only collects, uses or shares your personal information with your consent, which is required and permitted under the law. When you opt to provide your personal information, you agree that your personal information may be used as described in this confidentiality policy or as might be mentioned at the time such information is being collected.
Explicit Consent
You will sometimes be invited to give your explicit consent by checking a box to indicate that you agree to the transmission of your personal information and confirm that you have read the terms of this confidentiality policy. This option generally appears when you are completing the form on our website or on one of our platforms.
Implied Consent
In other cases, we may obtain your implied consent when we can reasonably conclude that you have given your consent through an action that you took or decided not to take. This generally occurs when the purpose of using your personal information is reasonably apparent to you, for example when you send an email by clicking on an email address or “Contact us.”
USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
Exploramer uses your personal information for the purposes indicated herein when such information is collected in accordance with your consent or for purposes authorized under the law.
SHARING OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
Exploramer shares personal information with its staff members whose functions require access to such data.
Exploramer also shares these data with its service partners, including, as mentioned above, those that manage the newsletter, online ticketing, and the Smarter Seafood online marketplace (via the creation of an online account). Other such third parties may include providers of technology solutions and professionals committed to helping us offer our services.
Any data sharing will be limited to what is necessary to achieve the aims for which these data were collected. Exploramer takes the necessary measures to ensure that the information is treated as confidential.
RETENTION
Personal information is retained as long as it is useful to achieve the objectives for which it was collected.
When a purchase is made, Exploramer only saves the payment information that you have provided. This information is shared and managed by service partners (in this case, AudienceView).
SECURITY
The personal information that we collect is saved in a secure environment. Individuals who work for us are required to respect the confidentiality of your information.
To ensure that your personal information is secure, we use physical, technological and administrative measures to protect the data that we collect from any unauthorized or accidental destruction, alteration, access or disclosure. Examples of such measures include limited access to our server room, firewalls, computer access management, staff training, etc.
We undertake to maintain a high degree of confidentiality by striving to integrate the latest technological innovations. However, as no mechanism is 100% fail-proof, there is always some level of risk whenever one shares personal information online.
LINKS TO OTHER WEBSITES
Links to other Internet sites or resources, provided exclusively for the sake of information or convenience, may appear on our website. Whenever you click on one of these links, you communicate with another website or Internet resource.
Given that it has no control of the external sites that certain links may redirect you to, Exploramer accepts no responsibility with regard to these websites or Internet resources as well as the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information that take place there. We encourage you to read the confidentiality policies of these other websites (which will apply in such cases) to learn how they collect and use your personal information.
USER RIGHTS
We undertake to offer you access, refusal and opt-out rights as they relate to your personal information.
The right of access is defined as the possibility for Internet users to consult or modify any information that concerns them.
The right of refusal is defined as the possibility for Internet users to decline that their personal information be used for certain purposes mentioned at the time it is collected.
The right to opt out is defined as the possibility for Internet users to request that their personal information no longer be included, for instance in a distribution list.

MODIFICATIONS
This confidentiality policy may on occasion be amended in order to maintain compliance with applicable laws and take into account any change in our data collection process. We recommend that our users verify our policy from time to time to ensure that they are aware of any updates. We may inform users by email of any changes made to this policy on an as-needed basis.
